Color Guard is the interpretation of music using auxiliary equipment such as flags, rifles & sabers. Color Guard stems from the military honor guard who paraded patriotic flags along side marching bands. The honor guard today still uses patriotic flags and perform displays of excellence with rifles. With origins in the military tradition of providing an armed escort for a regimental color, today's Drum Corps Color Guards provide the visual interpretation of the music played by the Corps. Members of a Color Guard develop skills of marching, jazz dance and equipment handling in the presentation of a complex routine - either on the summer contest field or in a series of indoor competitions known as "Winter guard". Most of the competitions are sponsored by Rocky Mountain Color Guard Association (RMCGA). Practices are typically two evenings per week and Saturdays in the
December to April timeframe. Winter guard fees are used to help offset
registration costs for the competitions and to help cover the cost
of the instructors, the music and the props. |
